DIY || Whipped Shea Butter!

img_2481On the journey to finding that perfect glow up, and hair care using natural products, it’s only natural that Shea butter had to be one of my sole companions.

What is Shea butter?

Shea butter is a skin super food that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and that is naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F. It offers UV protection (it is SPF ~6) and provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production. Shea butter has been used in Africa and other countries for years to improve skin and hair.

When I first got it, it was a bit too hard to use and I automatically gave up on it. I would seldom place it on my heater to melt just for a bit if I wanted to use it at that moment, but really, it was a futile attempt.

Well, I didn’t really give up after all. I went on to research on how to make Shea butter soft, but most importantly, how to KEEP IT SOFT!

And there it was, staring at me. I could have literally whipped it all this while.

Now, I don’t want you to go through the same struggle I did so imma just put it out here for y’all.

In this post, I’m going to show you how to whip your Shea butter into a fluffy, creamy paste!

HOW TO MAKE SHEA BUTTER SOFT !

For this super, super easy procedure, you’ll need :

  • Shea butter  – 4 medium sized scoops- (please note that this awesome product tends to increase in volume, to about twice its original size when it is whipped. So I’ll say you should use a minimal amount first )
  • Your Base oil – I used coconut oil as my base oil. Don’t worry, I know coconut oil hardens as the temperature drops but when it’s mixed, it won’t!
  • Scented oil – For a better smell, perhaps? I used three drops of lavender oil.
  • A mixing bowl & electric mixer

  • An empty jar to pour your finished product into
  • A spoon or spatula to transfer your product

LET’S BEGIN!

  • Place your Shea butter and coconut oil into the mixing bowl

  • Set your mixer to low speed and mix it slowly fo about 5 minutes .

  • After mixing, use your fingers to test the consistency. I wanted mine extra creamy and fluffy so, as you can guess, I went back to mixing!

  • After about 10 min, I achieved my desired consistency.
  • Use the spoon to transfer your newly whipped Shea butter into your plastic container or jar.

And Viola! Eazy, Peazy, Whipped Shea butter !!!

I use this mixture for both skin and hair care and it works so well, especially for my hair! it helps to hold that moisture and give it that shine for days huunny!

  2. I had basically the same experience when I first bought Shea butter. Whipping it makes all the difference. Even if you don’t have coconut oil or anything else to add, it still makes it way more useable.
