My 2017 Recap, Life & Blogging Goals For 2018

Happy New Year journalists!

2018 is upon us, and just as I said on my Instagram post, we have 365 new days, 365 new chances. And I plan to make the most of it.

Last year was a good year, though it went by so quickly if I must say. So much so that when it was time to write out my usual year in review, I had nothing to come up with. Nevertheless,  I want 2018 to be better. And it does not go without a lot of planning, self motivation and of course, staying positive.

With the start of the new year comes a brand new perspective and attitude on life. Everyone is so motivated to make big changes and do something different. This does not exclude me. This year, I have a few goals I want to achieve for myself, and what better time to share it than at the start of the new year?

January 1st always feels like the ultimate restart for me, which is a bit cliché I know, but I embrace it because I love taking part in something that a lot of other people are doing as well. The sense of community is fun, and I love getting to cheer each other on as we all work on bettering ourselves.

theashtreejournal.comSo, as cliché as this may seem, here are the 5 steps I plan to take, to make 2018 a better year for me.

P.S. This is a very long post so grab a cup of your favorite drink and read on. I hope you enjoy, and stick around till the end.

5 Things To Do In 2018

1| Be Proactive :

If you are proactive, you make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen to you. This year, the motto is to go out and get things done for myself, and make things happen. I just don’t want to have excuses anymore. So instead of waiting for things to happen, I will go out there and take what I want!

2| Let go of (more) clutter :

I talked about going towards the minimalist lifestyle in my 2017 review post, and I have taken rather successful steps towards that goal (like moving into a smaller apartment and letting go of a lot of stuff), but this year I want to do more. I may have fallen off the bandwagon lately, but that’s okay. To get back on track, I will start by cleaning out my closet, makeup and skin care collections all over again. So help me God!

3|Expand my Knowledge :

They say that knowledge is power. This year, I intend to gain that power by reading up on more self-development books, educational material and listen to podcasts that help me improve myself and career.
I always used to be eager to learn new things, and be more knowledgeable. But recently, I’ve found myself too busy for it and not finding any use in it. And this is where I’m wrong. Everything you learn could be of value in your everyday life.

4|Make time for the things  I love :

And create a good work-school-life balance. In 2017, one of my biggest challenges was finding balance. I often found myself being over drained and stressed out just because I forgot to deal with an aspect of my life and it came crashing down. This year I hope to find the balance between blogging, studying and working. If possible, I hope to have a better social life too. This seems kind of impossible tough, when I think about it but if I can at least reach a 60 – 75% balance, I think I’m good.

5| Shamelessly Promote Myself :

I don’t know why, but when this blog began to gain popularity among people (especially the ones I know personally), I became more shy about my craft. When people said I was good, or called me by my blog name, I felt slightly embarrassed. This year, that is all going to change. I intend to be that individual that doesn’t give a rats crap about what other people think of them promoting themselves. This is 2018. I am a good blogger, and I wont let anyone stop me from promoting something I am proud of.

But What About Your Blogging Goals?

Of course, I couldn’t end this post without listing out a few blogging goals for 2018.

Collaborations : There are amazing bloggers out there that I have my heart and eyes set on to collaborate with,  and hopefully this comes to fruition. I am so excited to collaborate with other bloggers because, first of all, this will easily guide me more into the blogging community, and also give you guys the chance to discover amazing talent out there. Stay tuned!

Stick to one layout : I don’t know if anyone noticed (and I’m hoping that not a lot of you did), I changed my blog layout a lot in the past year. I don’t know what spirit of indecisiveness came over me, but I went through at least 10 different blog themes and layouts. Smh.

This year, I really want to find a perfect theme and stick to it for at least 6 months. This is a challenge that if I overcome, I will be so happy!

Make more blogger friends : I do appreciate the love and support from my real life, non blogger friends. But sometimes, the blogosphere can get a little bit lonely. So if you are like me and is willing to connect and chat about all things blogging, hit a sister up 😉

Blog and Photography Improvement : I have come to realize in the past year that blogging isn’t just about writing and publishing your post. A lot goes on behind the scenes of a successful blog post; and these include SEO optimization, keywords, Image naming and so on. With photography, I intend to improve my flatlay photography, lighting, editing and all of that good stuff.

Did You Complete all of your 2017 Goals?First off, if you made it to this part of the post, well done. YOU SMART, YOU LOYAL!

theashtreejournal.comMy 2017 Goals were more mindful and I was able to achieve at least 80% of my goals, one way or another.

  • Get out of my comfort zone.  : I can say now, that compared to last year, I have definitely gotten out of my comfort zone and this was great because I learned a lot and became a better person at communication, especially.
  • Learn a new skill (I’m thinking a more vocational skill like sewing or hair making) : Well this is a bit half and half if I may say, I did learn a new skill, but it wasn’t vocational. I learned photography, which hopefully should be perfected in 2018. And now that I think about it, I should really take up that hair making skill for 2018.
  • Learn a new language : I did learn a little bit of french. This year, I hope to improve.
  • Expand my friendship circles. : This was one of the best goals I set for myself. In 2017, I made over 100 real life friends/acquaintances. I achieved this by going out more, living in an Erasmus hostel, traveling and generally putting myself out there. So yay me, for that!
  • Keep a more minimalist lifestyle : As I mentioned earlier in this post, I may have backtracked a bit, but I certainly reduced a huge amount of clutter in my life.

Whew, we made it to the end! 2017 was amazing, and here’s to an even more amazing 2018!

What are your 2018 goals? Let me know in the comments section!

  1. Yassss to shamelessly promoting yourself! It’s something that I seriously struggled with in 2017 but I’m learning to embrace it and shout it to the hills when I succeed at something, or publish something, because if I’m not proud of and advocating for my work, who will?

  2. I love your “shamelessly promote” yourself goal. I’ve come to learn over the past year that if you don’t brag about yourself, nobody will. Get out there and kill it this year, girlfriend!

  3. You did great job in 2017, best wishes for your 2018 goals. I see some great points you made here about sticking to one layout and collaborations.

  4. These are fab goals, so all the best in achieving them this year! I’d love to be blogger friends with you, and maybe do a joint post at some point, if you’re up for it? 🙂 x
