“Lady Gaga, one of the most iconic artistes in the world, is pretty much relatable.”

This was my entire thought, while watching Lady Gaga’s Netflix documentary, Lady Gaga : Five Foot Two.

Directed by Chris Moukarbel, the film follows the Grammy winner in the year leading up to the release of her 2016 album, Joanne.

When I clicked to watch on Netflix, I thought it’d be just another one of those celebrity documentaries which always turned out to be bittersweet trappings.

From the making of her album and her Super Bowl halftime show performance to her debilitating hip injury and the aftermath of her split from fiancé Taylor Kinney, Gaga holds nothing back.

Suddenly Gaga, who is reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars, seems relatable.

Like anyone else, she has had to manage her physical pain, a lot. It actually broke  my heart when I saw her crying in agony or searching for answers in an appointment with her doctor, how the torment of the chronic pain condition, fibromyalgia wears down her soul.

The revelation of Gaga’s vulnerability really expanded as I continued to watch the movie. While this documentary offered a glimpse into the megastar’s life, it also strangely doubled as a guide to coping with your own humanity.

The fundamental lesson is this: Emotional and physical pain is real, and pretending it’s not is the path to suffering.

  1. Wow, I had no idea Lady Gaga had Fibro! My mom has rheumatoid arthritis which I know isn’t fibromyalgia but is also an autoimmune disease and the pain is so real but so invisible! I can’t wait to watch the doc!

  2. I didn’t even know this documentary existed but, I’ll definitely be tuning in when I get home from work. I’ve always been a fan of hers and I know that she was dealing with a lot health wise but, I never knew it was to this extent. Thanks for sharing this! I can’t wait to watch it.
