Self Care September : This Month’s Challenge You Should Participate In

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

Maria Robinson

August (and probably the past months on 2019) may have been terrible, but I am a big believer of choosing the way we control our future.

Sure, to some certain extent, there are things we cannot control. But how about working towards the ones we can?

September is a special month for me. I love it because it reminds me of new beginnings in many ways. For students, the new school year starts in September. A new season (fall) starts in September, and moreover, it’s the last quarter of the year. And, did you know that September is Self-Care Awareness Month too?

This period of Self–Care Awareness is a time to remind ourselves that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential.

Self-care is often neglected in our everyday lives. We tend to put others needs before our own when we know that it is vital to remember that we cannot fill someone else’s cup from our own empty vessel. While getting a massage or taking a walk are beautiful examples of taking time for our well-being, self-care can be more widespread than that.

Self-care knows no boundaries. It is something that everyone, without any omissions, can benefit from practising on a daily basis. True self-care is not self-centred nor selfish; it is simply keeping yourself the focus of your own life. It’s about paying attention to how you feel in each moment, communicating clearly, speaking up for yourself and saying yes or no…guilt free.

So, how do you self care?

For many of us, stress is a big part of our everyday life. So much so that now we even glorify how stressed out we are, as if the more stress we go through determines the productivity of our daily activities.

How then do we de-stress? Its simply eliminating a big or even small parts of our day to day activities that increase our stress. Do you know that if you took out at least 30 mins each day to simply breathe, it would reduce stress by at least 20%? (not scientifically proven)

There are at least 25 ways to destress and you can also read ways to handle stress on one of my older blog posts here.

Say NO!

Part of self-care involves putting ourselves first. And if that means not pleasing people anymore, then we are making progress. Learning to say no is something we can all learn to adapt.

It’s ok to say no if you don’t want or aren’t able to do something at the moment. Taking on too many commitments, especially to please people, can put extra pressure on yourself and cause more stress.

Be kind to others

It is usually said that : the way you think about and treat others is often the way you think about and treat yourself.

As part of your self-care, you can choose to be kinder towards others. With time, become kinder and more understanding towards yourself too. For example, a good act of kindness that always makes me feel good is paying it forward:

Why should you pay it forward?

You feel better about yourself because you‘re trying to make everyone’s lives better, especially your own. Others trust you more readily and take you into their confidence when they see you paying it forward. They respect you more because they have less reason to doubt you. Paying it forward erases ego.

For me, it can be as simple as paying for the next customer on a queue in a coffee shop. This usually makes them feel good and I go about my day knowing I have made someone smile that day. Other simple acts of kindness include letting someone into your lane while driving. Encouraging a friend or a family member when they are uncertain or unmotivated. Or just being there to listen to someone vent.

One of the best things in life is taking care of yourself and enjoying it!  Taking care of yourself isn’t being selfish, it is crucial for balance.

Hopefully, this blog post encourages you to take some “me time” throughout this month and do daily self-care while having a little fun taking care of you!

How do you Self Care?

Lifestyle || Some self care tips ✨✨

Hi everyone, hope you’ve had a great week so far, I have had the laziest week ever(pretty much stayed in bed and watched Netflix all through) -living the life, or so…I think….

Anyway, I was on tumblr and I saw these really nice tips which I think I could use to switch up my life a bit. And of course, being the nice person I am, I thought to share to my lovely readers.
So here goes…

If you wouldn’t speak to your friend like that, don’t speak to yourself like that.

Your body is your hallowed ground that will be with you through your entire life – so be gentle to it. Wash it tenderly, give it lots of water to drink, eat a little slower, stretch it out and try to avoid exercise that physically hurts you.

Anxiety and stress can be tempered by breathing through the abdomen, rather than the chest. Let the area below your ribs rise and fall as you breathe deeply. Feel the air move up and through you.

You might spend the entire day in bed feeling low, but so might two hundred and sixty one other people across your city. Go easy on yourself. You are never the only one.

Consider simple ways to feel better when you’re feeling down. Lay in the sun for half an hour and let your skin drink vitamin D. Play with a pet for a little while. Do something small for someone else, like hanging your roommate’s washing out, or wheeling your neighbours’ bin to the curb, or buy a small gift for your mother.

Some days, putting the washing on and vacuuming is your mountain to climb. Other days, a career-defining presentation or dream-job interview is your mountain to climb. The size of a task does not dictate the difficulty. Accept this.

Your immediate past can dictate your mood. A night spent drinking or on drugs will always mean a heavy come-down the next day. A night spent eating wholesome, real food and getting enough sleep will likely leave you energised and pleasant the next day. Choose wisely.

Find your bottomless well of self-esteem and better position yourself to access it. If it is cooking, do a grocery shop or find an interesting recipe for dinner. If it is drawing, set up a sacred space for that purpose alone. If it is running, clean your runners and download a new playlist. Make your self esteem well easy to drink from.
